I couldn't believe how quickly my son got through this book. He loved it, thought it was really funny. He showed me some of the pages, and I thought the pictures were bright and engaging. The flip o ramas ARE legitimately cool to look at. So far our kids have loved everything by Dav Pilkey, and this book is no exception.
My son (8) was a reluctant reader so I thought I would give graphic novels a try and everything changed for us. During the school week ( we home school) I have a 20 minute silent, independent reading time during the day and it was always a battle before. Now that we have graphic novels he reads for as long as an hour or more sometimes. Dog Man is by far his favorite of all of them. I can hear him cracking up when he's in there reading. He was on pins and needles waiting for this one to come out and has read it multiple time already. Thank you Dav Pilkey for making my son into a reader.
I love these books! they're so funny! I can't stop reading them. The reason it's so good is because it has a kitten in it. He's sooo cute!!!
our son has trouble in reading but he loves this whole series. We have talked to his school and teachers and this is above his grade and level and is very helpful for him and they are encouraging him to keep reading. It's great to find a book that he is so happy about and asks for more to read.
We found Dogman at my child's bookfair a year ago and have since purchased every title and are now anxiously awaiting our pre orders with each new release. If you like Captain Underpants, you will definitely enjoy the tale of the half man/ half dog super cop. We read these before bedtime. At first it was just a father/son thing, but my wife began to enjoy what she overheard and now joins us for our pre bed readings of the adventures of Dog Man.
I have a 5 yr old little boy. We discovered these books one day at Walmart. As soon as he heard George and Harold from Captain Underpants, he just had to have the first one!
They're written like a comic book that was written by 2 little boys. Whoever really does write it, and draw it, must have a pre-teen boy because it is dead on!
We've loved every book so far. They're fun to read and my boy loves to hear them. The characters are funny and pretty easy to add voices to them. ðŸ˜
I'm really loving this latest twist of using great literary works as a really loose interpretational jumping off point. (i.e. A Tale of Two Kitties vs A Tale of Two Cities).
Bottom line Great book to read TO THEM and great book for THEM TO READ! ðŸ˜ŠðŸ“š
A very funny book with ample drawings that entice the younger readers to enjoy and finish the book in one sitting. As addicting as the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series but for younger children.
Bought this for my grandson who is 6 and starting first grade this year. He is just beginning to read and this series â€œDog Manâ€ sparked his interest in reading. He has since moved on into other higher quality reading in just a months time! We were in a bookstore with his older sister who loves to read and he was having a hard time finding something that he wanted to read and COULD read but this series caught his attention . So I bought him the book and he finished it in no time and asked for this one so I got it on for a much better price!

Let me start off by saying, I don't write reviews to often and this is my very first book review. I'm totally new to making cards and wanted to make something different for Christmas and the upcoming holidays. So, I searched YouTube for "How To Make Pop-Up Cards" and found Duncan Birmingham's videos on "The Pop-Up Channel." I started watching his videos and enjoyed them so much that I had to order his book. After receiving my copy I started reading pages 1 to page 27 and stopped because I wanted create and understand the basic shapes of pop-ups while watching Mr. Birmingham's video tutorials on YouTube (I'm a visual learner.) I spend several hours creating basic shapes along with his great video tutorials in which he shows examples from other pop-up books to help the viewer better understand how the shapes are used. He's a great teacher and his book is easy to read and understand with colorful drawings, photos and also include templates in the back of the book.

What I really like about this book is give you the basic foundations for understanding V-Folds, Tabs, Parallel-folds, etc. to create your own amazing pop-up cards and books. Another reason is I can ask the author questions in the comment section of his YouTube videos and he replies. How many authors do you know will take the time to reply back after you have purchased their books? I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn how to create pop-up cards and books because you're getting more than just a book with the added YouTube videos. I will update this review with photos of cards I've made after I finish the book.
I've been following the author's tutorials on YouTube, and must say this book provides a wealth of detailed information. The verbiage is concise and accurate. Among the "How To" books on this subject, "Pop-Up Design and Paper Mechanics" is the very best.
This book takes the reader from fundamentals and theory to involved and intricate paper mechanics. If you only buy 1 book on the subject of pop-ups and paper mechanics, buy this book!
One of the clearest books about pop-ups I have encountered. I have also used Paul Jackson's "The pop-up book" and David Carter & James Diaz, "The elements of Pop-up" (the advantage to this book is that there are working mechanisms that you can disect).
Birmingham is very straight forward and easy to follow. His written instructions and step by step pictures help in the understanding. The disadvantage is that he does not show the closing of the mechanism and does not have any working examples in the book. I had recently attended a class a Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina and I found this book was a great help to assist me to remember the things I had learned as I play at home and hone my skills.
This book is great! I make cards and have tried some of the projects. Good instructions, I'm just in the beginning, and the cards are turning out cool
looking. I've only done a few of his pop ups, it's really amazing to fold, cut and manipulate paper and have a pop up do such amazing things. This author also has these pop up tutorials on you tube, so if I get stuck on one I'll go out there and watch him actually make the pop up I'm working on.
Great book, love it!
This is a valuable book that clearly outlines the principles and techniques required to make complex pop-ups. The author, Duncan Birmingham, first introduces the reader to a series of foundational shapes that are used to power the pages of most commercial pop-up books. Once you understand the principles behind how they work and learn the technique to make each one, you can then modify and combine them to experiment and create your own. He also has an excellent website with videos of all the techniques illustrated in his book. I find it very helpful to be able to watch him in action when I'm trying to learn a new folding technique. The combination of written instructions, diagrams, AND video support is hard to beat. I highly recommend this book for anyone who would like to go beyond the basics to develop more advanced paper engineering skills.
I wish I would have purchased this first! I bought a few other books about pop-up and paper mechanics and this is the best. I found it because I happened up the author's YouTube channel - which is excellent by the way - This is easy to follow. I do wish he would have included more samples of how he would use the models. He shows examples in his videos and they are wonderful but I am a beginner and could have used simple examples of finished projects. I also teach art to children and the simple examples may be easier for them to identify with. But really this is great and someone with a more logical mind would have no problem.
I already have enough pop-up how-to books that fill me with envy and despair, so I like this one for its classical, theoretical approach. The book's playful design offsets the obvious effort it takes to really learn something and own the knowledge. It feels like somebody's workshop rather than an art gallery--a place for learning what one needs to know to have this craft serve one's own imagination. The author has been teaching paper engineering for 20 years, and it shows.
Very helpful, easy to understand sections on techniques... the sample cut-outs are very attractive and useful for learning.

A BILINGUAL (ENGLISH AND FRENCH) BIOGRAPHY OF AN ACADIAN MAN NAMED CHARLES TERRIAULT who was born in 1796 while his family was in exile in QuÃ©bec. Charles chose to migrate to the Madawaska territory which was a no-manâ€™s land that the Acadians earlier chose as their new home in 1785. The Madawaska territory included the northern part of the present-day state of Maine and a significant part of northwestern New Brunswick. Charlesâ€™ grandfather, Joseph Terriot (1719-1765) was an Acadian, who was born, raised and married in Grand-PrÃ©, Acadia before the eviction of the Acadians by the English in 1755. After the French ceded Acadia to the English in 1713, Joseph decided to leave the home of his ancestors since the 1604 to pursue a better life; a life unfettered by the politics of the meddlesome French and the belligerent English. For more than a century, his branch of the Terriot family would be migrating and looking for their home. But it would be his grandson, Charles that would bring this migration to the wilderness of the Madawaska River. â€˜Destination Madawaskaâ€™ begins with a summary of the history leading to the period of Charles' life which began in 1796. To set the scene, the life of Charles' grandfather and his migration from Acadia to Canada is summarized. THE GENEALOGY AND HISTORY OF THE GREATER TERRIAULT FAMILY IS ALSO PRESENTED FOR THOSE FEW BRANCHES OF THE FAMILY THAT MIGRATED TO THE MADAWASKA TERRITORY, SPECIFICALLY THE UPPER ST JOHN VALLEY. Then we go into the details of the life of Charles, the first francophone settler of present-day Saint-Jacques on the Madawaska River. After his arrival in 1823, Charles was joined three years later in 1826 by Pierre Plourde, his brother-in-law who later built and operated the first mill on the Iroquois River. Another brother-in-law, Jean Saint-Onge also arrived in the same year and became Charles' neighbor. So, this history of the Terriault family also includes some of the history of the Plourde, Saint-Onge and Morneault families. A KEY GOAL OF THIS BOOK IS TO PRESENT THE EVIDENCE THAT CHARLES WAS THE FIRST FRANCOPHONE TO SETTLE IN PRESENT-DAY SAINT-JACQUES ALONG THE MADAWASKA RIVER IN 1823. Although we outline the lives of the members of Charles' small family, we will focus on his second son, Dolphis, a founding father of Saint-Jacques-de-Madawaska. Before the parish was formed in St Jacques, Holy Mass was celebrated in Dolphis' home. This family history is heavily illustrated with photos, satellite photos and maps of the Madawaska area. Also, we are proud to feature and publish for the first time, several important photos from the personal family album of PÃ©lagie Theriault Morneault (1860-1931). PÃ©lagie was a daughter of Dolphis and wife of Charles Morneault of Moulin Morneault, in Saint-Jacques, NB. After her mother died at a very young age, PÃ©lagie was raised by her cousin (once-removed) Adeline Plourde and her husband Pascal Morneault. THIS SECOND EDITION INCLUDES SEVERAL UP-DATES, CORRECTIONS AND IMPROVEMENTS With the generous assistance of genealogist Jean-Guy Poitras, we resolved new evidence found earlier of an additional member of Charles Terriaultâ€™s [62] family; their first son, Thomas Charles. In my research for my new book â€œMoulins du Madawaskaâ€, I learned that Joseph [1408] apprenticed milling under the Thibodeau family. That is how the Terriaultâ€™s of St Basile came to be a key milling family on the Iroquois River. We corrected our conclusion regarding a â€˜mysteryâ€™ photo which we found in PÃ©lagie ThÃ©rriault Morneaultâ€™s family album. We initially thought that the subject as Pierre Plourde but after reviewing some of first scans of the photo, we saw some traces of PÃ©lagie Theriaultâ€™s most recognizable handwriting which identified the subject as Charles Terriault. Also, following additional analyses of the migration of the Acadians to the Madawaska territory, we identified each of the 20 Theriault family branches that migrated to the St John Valley.
